Ladies and gentlemen, today - May 15th, 2008 - marks a very special occasion for me.
I have not driven my car to work for exactly one year.
*Throws confetti, punches out god*
You better believe that I am all sorts of stoked about this. A year ago I had my doubts that I was going to be able to pull it off but it proved to be an absolute cakewalk. It's amazing how easy it is to not be a total pansy. Who would have thought?
So where do I go from here? What's the next step in the challenge to myself? Crawling to work? Rig up a giant cannon that will fire me from the roof of my apartment to a carefully placed net? Pogo stick?
I think the next logical step is to get the operation.
I am officially pledging to get a carectomy.
I've come to the realization that not only do I not need to own a car, but that I also do not want to own a car. In fact, I hate owning a car. My car has been nothing to me but a black hole for money, as I'm still making payments and keeping it insured. This Tuesday I am planning on going to the Registry to get temp tags for my car so it can be test driven, taking it to a shop to get everything checked out, and then posting it on Craigslist. If anyone is interested in a 2002 Jetta with low miles, let me know!

Sweet! Congrats man! I'm at eight months myself.
And I'd love to get rid of the motor vehicle, but my girl's job is far away. We're looking for new employment within walking/cycling distance though.
I'm both proud of you and jealous.

Hi. Please join the Bicycle to Work! LinkedIn networking group. Members pledge that they will try to ride their bicycle to work or on an errand at least once a week. Although the benefits should be obvious, let me outline them here.
Right now people in the industrialized world are facing two very grave problems: obesity and a growing scarcity of oil. Compounding this problem is the new food shortage brought about, in part, by the conversion of food cropland to bio-fuel crop production. Most people feel powerless to help, but there is one thing that we can do. Ride our bicycles to work.
If everyone would agree to ride their bikes to work one day per week we could cut oil consumption by as much as 10-15%. No one would argue that riding a bike burns more calories than driving the car. Although popular politically right now, most bio-fuels consume more energy than they produce. We would be much better to eat those bio-crops then use our own energy to transport us around.
So spread the word. Make it a movement! Bicycle to work one day a week and do your part to cut back obesity and the overuse of oil and precious cropland.
Just go to my profile at http://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffreylstevenson and you can click on the group to be included. While you are there, don't forget to ask to link to my network of more than 9,000,000 like-minded professionals. I accept all invitations and look forward to meeting you.

Congratulations. I hit the one-year mark on May 1, and I was also surprised how easy it actually was. After much consideration, I decided to continue my no car to work streak to a total of 500 days (the year was 211 days).
Keep it up, and good on ya for the carfree plans. I am too chicken to take that step, yself. So, the truck stays in the driveway, just in case...
